Trip report: Wetpixel Whale Sharks 2017

So day 3 dawned sunny and warm, and as planned, we headed out On the boats at 7 am. There was still fair amount of wind, and the ride out was a little rough.

Of course, everyone was nervous that today would be a repeat of yesterday, but this was certainly not the case.

We searched for around half an hour, before getting a call on the radio that was a group of sharks. We motored on over to find….around 150 whale sharks!

Given that Jacques Cousteau reckoned that he had only ever seen one whale shark in his career, the whole group exceeded his total by several factors!

The multitude of sharks and the amount of time that everyone had in the water, gave lots of time to experiment with creative techniques. I have been shooting the new Nikon 8-15 mm f/3.5-4.5 on a Nikon D810 behind a Seacam Fisheye port with the shades removed. Full circle fisheye images of whale sharks!

The sharks were really densely packed, with 5 or 6 at a time turning in feeding circuits around us. The whole group has discovered the joys of hanging out under whale sharks

Everyone spent hours in the water.

So, we are all pretty tired now! Looking forward to seeing what day 4 brings.
