Jason deCaires Taylor unveils new underwater sculpture in Bahamas

Atlas

Jason deCaires Taylor, well known for his underwater sculptures, has unveiled a new sculpture titled Atlas off New Providence in Nassau, Bahamas. The 18 foot tall and 60 ton sculpture is the larges underwater sculpture ever to be deployed underwater. The sculpture was commissioned by the Bahamas Reef Environment Education Foundation, and the hope is that it will eventually be colonized as an artificial reef.

Ocean Atlas references the Ancient Greek sculpture of Titan Atlas holding the heavens but depicts a young local Bahamian girl sustaining the ceiling of the Ocean.

Due to the large size of the sculpture, it was constructed entirely underwater in sections. Just before final installation, the sculpture was hoisted out of the water for final inspections. Atlas was installed off New Providence on the 4th and 5th of October 2014 and joined other works by local artists Willicey Tynes and Andret John.
