Wetpixel Associate editor Alex Mustard has published a gallery of images of blue sharks (Prionace glauca) on his Facebook page. Perhaps surprising, the images were all taken off the UK’s southern coast. He describes the experience:

“Seeing something in the ocean for the first time is always special. It might surprise some, but on Friday morning, I’d never seen a blue shark, the sleek, graceful hunter of the big blue. And I never imagined I’d break that duck in England.

But on Friday I headed with Charles Hood to try his new blue shark photo trip and in a few hours went from zero blue shark photos, to over a 1000. In fact they are still downloading as I type this! It was an amazing day and we even saw two basking sharks and two sunfish.

I found the blues fascinating to watch. Their elegant bodies slice effortlessly through the water and they definitely have the same self-confidence as that other big-blue-specialist, the oceanic white tip shark. It was amazing to see this in British Waters.
