Death by ctenophore on BlennyWatcher

Ctenophore-BlennyWatcher-Wetpixel

Ned and Anna DeLoach of BlennyWatcher have been studying the habits on benthic ctenophores during their recent trip to Indonesia. These creatures, related to comb jellies, seem to attach themselves to a substrate and then use two tentacles to catch food passing by. The substrate often seems to be starfish, although they have been recorded attached to coral too. Traditional wisdom has been that the creatures are actually fishing for plankton in the current, but Ned recently caught still and video images of them catching crabs, fish and even a tube worm. Ned and Anna comment that this actually fairly logical, given that comb jellyfish are the “dominant carnivores in the zooplankton food chain.” (Images by Ned DeLoach/BlennyWatcher.com).
